About Pixel Snake
Pixel Snake is a free snake game online that plays like the ones built into mobile phones around the turn of the millennium. You steer a hungry snake around a walled field, eat apples, grow longer and try not to crash. It is simple to learn and hard to put down: every apple makes the snake longer and a little faster, so the field slowly fills with your own tail.
It is a classic snake with a few modern comforts. Two quick key presses are both remembered, so tight U-turns never get swallowed. Golden beetles appear now and then for a big bonus. You can pick a monochrome green LCD look that recalls the Nokia snake game era, or a bright colour palette. Once you have opened the page it keeps working with no connection.
How to play
- Choose New Game. The snake waits until you press a direction (or swipe) to start moving.
- Steer toward the apple. Each one is worth 10 points and adds one cell to the snake.
- After every fifth apple a golden beetle appears. Catch it for 50 to 100 points: the faster you get there, the more it pays. It blinks just before it runs away.
- Hitting a wall, a stone block or your own body ends the game.

Tips for a longer snake
Hug the edges early
While the snake is short, travel along the walls and cut across only to grab food. Keeping the middle of the field empty gives you room to escape later, when your tail is long enough to box you in.
Plan your U-turns
You cannot reverse on the spot, so turning back always takes two moves. Press both turns quickly: the game queues them, and the snake folds neatly back on itself without touching its neck.
Let some beetles go
A beetle is worth up to 100 points, but chasing one through a crowded field is how long games end. If the path is risky, eat the apple instead and wait for the next one.
Watch the speed creep up
The snake gains a little speed with every apple, so a route that felt relaxed at the start becomes tight later on. Give yourself one extra cell of space before each turn and keep your next two moves in mind, not just the next one.
Hardcore mode
Set Difficulty to Hardcore in Options for the real test. The snake starts faster and speeds up more with every apple, beetles disappear sooner, the walls stay on, stone mazes rise every 10 apples, and there are no continues. Hardcore has its own table on the leaderboards.

Yes. Pixel Snake is completely free, runs in your browser and needs no download or account. Signing in is optional and only used for online leaderboards.
Is this the Nokia snake game?
No. Pixel Snake is an original game inspired by the snake games that came preinstalled on mobile phones around the year 2000, including the famous Nokia ones. The art, sounds and code were all made from scratch for NoInternet Arcade.
Can I play the snake game offline?
Yes. Open the page once while connected and your browser keeps the whole arcade. After that Pixel Snake loads and plays with no internet at all. You can also install the arcade as an app from the footer.
How do I play on a phone?
Tap Play, then swipe anywhere on the game screen in the direction you want to go. If you prefer buttons, use the four arrow buttons beside the screen.
Can I switch off the walls?
Yes. Set Walls to Wrap in Options: the snake leaves one side of the field and comes back on the opposite side, just like on many old phones. Only your own tail can stop you then.
What is Hardcore mode?
A tougher ruleset for experienced players: a faster snake that speeds up more with every apple, beetles that vanish sooner, walls always on, stone mazes every 10 apples and no continues. Hardcore scores go on their own leaderboard.
How do online high scores work?
Your best games are always saved on your device. Sign in with your email to also post them on the daily and all-time Pixel Snake leaderboards.
