About Pixel Racer

Pixel Racer is a free retro racing game built like the 3D racers that ran on Java phones in the mid-2000s. A low chase camera sits right behind your car as you race down a pseudo-3D road full of sharp corners, hills and roadside scenery against five rivals. It is a car racing game online that loads in a moment, and once you have visited the page it keeps working as an offline racing game too.

Everything is original: the chunky pixel cars, the dithered asphalt, the fictional sponsors on the arches and the buzzing chiptune engine. The HUD shows your position, race and lap timers, a minimap with every car and a speed gauge in km/h or mph.

How to play

  1. Choose New Game, pick one of eight tracks and a lap count from 1 to 10, then pick a car.
  2. Wait for the three red lights and go on green.
  3. Stay on the asphalt. Off the road you slow down, and the further out you go, the slower you get.
  4. Brake before sharp corners. Too fast and your car slides wide with smoking tyres.
  5. Overtake rivals on the side; rear-ending them costs speed. Only 3-lap races count for the online leaderboards.

The six cars

CarStyleStrengths

Fulmine V12Italian wedge supercarFastest car in the game; loses the most speed off the road.
Falke TurboGerman rear-engine coupeBest brakes and precise, balanced handling.
Mudlark R4Rally hatchbackKeeps most of its speed on grass, sand, snow and gravel.
Pixie 850Classic city carSlow on straights, but quickest off the line and grips like glue.

The eight tracks

Tips and tricks

Brake before the corner, not in it

The yellow sign at the top of the screen and the 3-2-1 boards at the roadside announce every sharp corner. When the sign flashes BRAKE, you are too fast for the bend ahead.

Control the drift

A slide scrubs off speed and throws you wide. Lift early, turn in on the inside and let the car run out to the edge on exit. Cars with good handling, like the Pixie 850 and Kitsune RS, can carry more speed through corners.

Match the car to the track

Fast cars win on the oval and in the desert; grippy cars win on twisty tracks. If you keep running wide, try the Mudlark R4.

Hardcore mode and retro FPS

Switch Difficulty to Hardcore in Options for faster rivals that never wait for you, plus harsher penalties for slides, off-road excursions and crashes. Hardcore times go to their own leaderboards. The Retro FPS option draws the race about 15 times a second with short-range pop-in, the authentic look of a pixel racing game on an old phone; switch it off for smooth motion.

Want more? Try the endless runner Dino Run, stack floors in Sky Stack, climb in Jump Up or compare your times on the leaderboards.

Pixel Racer FAQ

Is Pixel Racer free to play?

Yes. Pixel Racer is a completely free racing game that runs in your browser. There is nothing to download and no account is needed. Signing in is optional and only used for the online leaderboards.

Can I play this racing game offline?

Yes. Open the page once while you are connected and your browser keeps the whole arcade. After that Pixel Racer loads and plays with no internet at all, so it works as an offline racing game on a plane, a train or anywhere without signal.

Does Pixel Racer work on phones?

Yes. Tap Play and the game fills your screen in portrait mode, like an old Java phone. Steer with the arrow buttons on the left or switch Options > Steering to Tilt and steer by tilting your phone. AUTO-GAS is on by default on touch screens, so you only have to steer and brake.

Are the cars real models?

No. All six cars are original pixel art with invented names. Each one is inspired by a classic style, such as American muscle or a tiny city car, but there are no real brands, logos or model names in the game.

Why does the game look choppy and why does scenery pop in?

That is the RETRO FPS option, which recreates how racing games looked on mid-2000s phones: the picture updates about 15 times a second and trees, signs and rivals appear suddenly a short distance ahead. The game logic still runs at 60 steps per second. Turn RETRO FPS off in Options for fluid motion.

How are race times ranked?

Your score is your total time for a standard 3-lap race, so lower is better. Every track has its own board, and Hardcore times are kept separate. Races of 1, 2 or 4 to 10 laps are local only and keep their own best times on your device. See the Pixel Racer leaderboards.

Can I switch between km/h and mph?

Yes. The speedometer shows km/h by default; choose Options > Units to switch to mph.
