Web Crawler Guide: Web Lines, Chains, Hazards and Portals
Published · Last updated
Web Crawler is a free endless runner in your browser, and its level is a website you already know: NoInternet Arcade itself. You play a little pixel spider crawling down an endless, procedurally generated version of this site, past header bars, game cards, paragraphs, leaderboard tables, blog posts, buttons, daily quests and footers. Everything your feet touch lights up in neon, because you are a web crawler indexing the page. Meanwhile something is eating the internet from the top. This guide covers moving, scoring, every hazard and all twelve portal worlds.
How Web Crawler works
The spider’s eight jointed legs only grip page elements: text lines, buttons, cards, table rows. The dark page between the elements is empty and you cannot walk on it, so to cross a gap you shoot a web line at the next element and zip over on the silk.
Every web line costs silk, shown by the bar at the top left of the screen. Longer lines cost more, and you spin silk back while your feet are on the page and from every bug and pickup. A line needs an element in reach: fire at empty page and it misses and you stumble. Zips in a row without crawling in between cool down longer each time, and lines get shorter as the game speeds up, so the rhythm is crawl where you can, web where you must.
Above you is THE 404, a void that devours the page from the top and keeps speeding up, a little faster still when all you do is zip. If it catches you, the run is over. Let go over empty page and you fall: a short drop is fine, a long one knocks you out for a moment, and a very long one loses you in the void (web a surface to catch yourself). You have one life and there is no finish line: crawl as deep as you can.
The page gets harder the deeper you go. THE 404 speeds up, the gaps get wider, text lines and table rows break apart into islands, and the hazards come more often and move faster.
Controls
| Action | Keyboard | Phone / tablet | Gamepad |
|---|---|---|---|
| Crawl | Arrows or W A S D | Analog stick (left) | Left stick or D-pad |
| Web line | Space, Enter, J, K or X | WEB button, or tap the page | A, X, RB or RT |
| Pause | P or Esc | Pause button | Start |
| Mute | M | Sound button | – |
Pressed with no direction, the web line aims straight down the page. Steer while you press it and it goes where you point, with a reticle marking exactly where it will land. On a phone you can also tap the page to shoot the web at that spot.
On phones and tablets the menus use the same round D-pad with OK as every other NoInternet game. When the run starts it turns into an analog stick on the left (push further to crawl faster) and a round WEB button on the right. Left-handed players can swap the sides in Options.
Scoring and chains
- Depth: 1 point for every 2 pixels you crawl down the page, half that while zipping or falling.
- Lighting up elements: 4 × multiplier for each new element.
- Glitch bugs: 50 × multiplier, or 300 × for a golden bug.
- Near misses: 75 × multiplier when a cursor click or a scan beam only just misses you.
- Webbed cursors: 150 × multiplier.
- Portal pickups: 150 × multiplier (Maze Muncher dots are worth less).
- CAPTCHA solved: 200.
- Cookie banner rejected: 150 × multiplier.
- Back from a portal: +500.
The multiplier comes from your CHAIN. Bugs, near misses, webbed cursors, portal pickups and every six elements you light up on foot are all links, and a chain stays alive for 4.5 seconds after the last one. Every 3 links raise the multiplier one step, x2, x3 and on up to x8 at 21 links. Getting stunned breaks the chain and drops you back to x1, so a long chain is as much about avoiding hits as finding bugs.
The results card shows your score and best, pages crawled, bugs eaten, best chain, elements indexed, portals and time. Signed in, your score goes on the leaderboards: Endless, or Endless Hardcore for Hardcore runs.
The hazards
None of these end a run on their own. Each one stuns you for about a second and breaks your chain. The danger is what that second costs you with THE 404 coming down.
- The cursor hunts you around the page. A red ring closes around it before it clicks, so when the ring shrinks, move. Better still, hit it with a web line: it is tied up for 2 to 3 seconds and you collect 150 × multiplier.
- Pop-up windows announce themselves with a blinking red dashed outline, then slam open. Get out of that rectangle. Once a pop-up is open you can walk on it until it closes, but do not be standing on it when it goes.
- The AV SCAN is an antivirus beam that sweeps across text blocks. Cross behind it, or let it pass close for a near miss.
- CAPTCHA walls (“I’M NOT A ROBOT”) block the page until you web the checkbox or touch it with a leg. Solving one is worth 200.
- Glitch bugs do not hurt you, they hurt the page: they sit on elements and corrupt them. Eat them for points, silk and a chain link, and the element is clean again.
The deeper you go, the more the web fights back. These join one by one during a run, each announced with a banner the first time you meet it:
- Broken links are red with a dashed underline. Walking on them is fine, but a web line stuck to one snaps after a moment and drops you. The reticle turns into a red cross over them.
- Lazy-loading blocks are grey skeleton placeholders. They are not solid until they load in view, so wait a beat or take another route.
- Spam mail flies along a row of text, always after a ”!” warning. Step out of its row.
- Infinite scroll feeds start crumbling row by row from the top the moment you touch them. Keep crawling down and do not stop on them.
- The cookie banner slides up from the bottom of the screen and walls off the whole page until you web its REJECT ALL box (ACCEPT ALL is a decoy).
THE 404
THE 404 is the clock you cannot stop. It keeps speeding up for the whole run and never waits for a stun, a CAPTCHA or a portal decision. Treat everything above you as already gone: if you crawl back up for a bug, make sure there is time to get back down.
On Hardcore (Options, then Difficulty) THE 404 starts faster, the difficulty ramps up quicker and stuns last longer. Hardcore runs have their own leaderboard.
The portal worlds
Every 15 to 25 seconds or so a game card on the page starts to glow, and sometimes two glow side by side so you can choose. You see all twelve worlds before any of them comes round again. Crawl into its picture and you warp into a short bonus world drawn in that game’s style, with its own hazard and its own collectible. When it is over, a BACK TO NOINTERNET.SPACE bar takes you home with +500. There is one world for each of the twelve games that came before Web Crawler:
- Pixel Snake: steal apples while snakes roam the LCD screens.
- Pixel Raptor: grab hearts on the sand ledges, dodging the cacti and the charging dino.
- Brick Tanks: collect stars on the brick walls while the tanks’ shells smash the bricks.
- Nib’s Flight: crystals on the pillar tops while the bat swoops across.
- Jump Up: bolts on moving and crumbling platforms.
- Sky Stack: coins on the floors while the crane swings a floor block.
- Pixel Racer: nitro cans on the road while cars race up toward you.
- Maze Muncher: eat the dots and the energizer. Spooks patrol the corridors and turn edible after the energizer.
- Invoker Trainer: Quas, Wex and Exort orbs, with an INVOKE bonus for all three in a row, while creep waves march across.
- Pixel Summer Games: gold medals on the track lanes, between the hurdles and the flying javelins.
- Pixel Winter Games: biathlon targets on the snow while skiers zoom by.
- Pixel Pitch: footballs to collect while defenders slide across.
Tips for deeper runs
- Pick your next element early. Know where the web line is going before you reach the edge. Hesitating at a gap is how THE 404 catches up.
- Trust the reticle. No reticle means the line would miss; a grey one means you are short of silk or still cooling down; a red cross means a broken link.
- Crawl to refill. Spamming the web runs you dry. A few steps on the page and a bug or two fill the silk bar again, and crawled depth scores double.
- Watch what you stand on. Pop-ups close and broken text lines leave small islands.
- Web the cursor. It removes the most persistent hazard for a few seconds and pays well.
- Protect your chain. Once the multiplier is high, a stun costs more than a risky bug is worth.
- Take the portals. The pickups feed your chain and the +500 adds up over a long run.
- Keep a safety margin. Stay far enough ahead of THE 404 that one stun does not end the run.
FAQ
Is Web Crawler free, and does it work offline?
Yes to both. It runs free in any modern browser, and after one visit online it keeps working with no connection, like every NoInternet game. Only leaderboard scores need a connection and a free account.
What ends a run?
THE 404 catching you, or a long fall into the empty page. Everything else only stuns you.
Are there skins?
Yes, six cosmetic spider skins on the Rewards page: White & Red, Neon Crawler, Ghost, Toxic, Glitch and Gold Spider. You buy them with stars from daily quests and the login streak, and they do not change how the game plays.
