Pixel Winter Games Guide: Tips for All Four Winter Events

Published · Last updated

Pixel Winter Games is the snowy companion of Pixel Summer Games: a free retro winter sports championship in your browser, inspired by the winter games people played on Java phones in the mid-2000s. You enter your name, pick your flag and take on seven rivals in four events. Every event is its own little game with its own controls, so this guide goes through them one by one: what to press, when to press it, and where the easy points are hiding.

How the championship works

The four events always run in the same order: biathlon mass start, 2-lap speed skating, freestyle and snowboarding. Your rivals are on the course with you. The whole pack starts the biathlon together and lies on the mats next to yours at the ranges, you skate in pairs, a rival drawn at random takes the mogul course beside yours and another one shares the snowboard track. The intro board of every event names the two rivals to watch.

To stay in the championship you need the qualifying mark in every event. Each event uses a decathlon-style points table: about 1000 points for a world-class result, never more than 1200 for one event. In the biathlon your shooting points are added to the points of your time, so its qualifying mark is in points. Your score is the sum of all four events, and the best three totals of the field stand on the podium.

EventQualify (Normal)Qualify (Hardcore)About 1000 pts
Biathlon mass start420 pts650 pts1:35 + shooting
2-lap speed skating44.50 s40.00 s34.50 s
Freestyle30.50 s26.50 s21.50 s
Snowboarding61.00 s54.00 s45.00 s

Just scraping every Normal mark is worth roughly 420 to 490 points per event, so a clean qualifying run lands around 1800 points, with plenty of room above that.

Controls in one minute

The on-screen hints always show the buttons of the controller you are using.

Biathlon mass start

All eight skiers start together on a long course over several hills. A stride pendulum swings below your skier: press ◀ as the needle reaches its left end and ▶ as it reaches its right end.

At the ranges

There are two ranges, 300 m apart, and no penalty loops: the shooting is settled in points. At each range the eight lanes lie side by side in one row and every skier has a lane of their own. You glide onto your mat, lie down at the first range and stand at the second, and look at your five targets through the rifle scope.

2-lap speed skating

Pairs, heat by heat, against the clock and the skater next to you. Two laps of the oval: a perfect race takes about 34 seconds, a little over 18 for the first lap from the standing start and about 16 for the flying second one.

Freestyle

A head-to-head on two mogul courses: you on one, a rival drawn at random on the other. The faster time wins.

Snowboarding

Seen from above, on a winding track down the mountain with three snow kickers.

Hardcore mode

Set Options, then Difficulty to Hardcore for a separate leaderboard. Every qualifying mark is tougher, the stride pendulum is faster with tighter timing, the arrows on the biathlon targets are fainter and you have less time to shoot, the skating and take-off circles and the mogul arrows come quicker, the whole field is close to world class, a false start disqualifies you, and there are no continues.

Practice first

Every event can be played on its own from Practice, and your personal bests are kept on the Records screen. Ten minutes on the range and on the ice will do more for your total than any number of full championships.

FAQ

Is Pixel Winter Games free?

Yes. The championship, practice mode and records are free in your browser, with no download and no account. Signing in is optional and only needed for the online leaderboards.

Does it work offline?

Yes. Open the page once while connected and your browser keeps the game. After that it plays with no internet at all, which makes it a good pick for a flight or a long train ride. See our list of browser games that work offline.

Can I use my own name and flag?

Yes. Before each championship you enter a name of up to 10 letters and digits and pick your country, the same way as in Pixel Summer Games. If you are signed in, your leaderboard nickname is filled in for you.

Where did the ski jump and the bobsleigh go?

The championship was rebuilt around four events, with snowboarding and freestyle taking over from the ski jump, the bobsleigh and the slalom. Because the totals are on a new scale, the four-event championship has fresh leaderboards.

Is this Playman Winter Games?

No. It is an original game inspired by the winter sports games of the Java phone era. The athletes, nations, art, sounds and code were all made from scratch for NoInternet Arcade.

Ready? Play Pixel Winter Games, then check where your total ranks on the leaderboards.
