Pixel Vigil Guide: Keepers, Weapons, Evolutions and Dawn

Published · Last updated

Pixel Vigil is our newest free game: a survive-the-night horde game in your browser. You are a lantern keeper on a dark field, and from every side the creatures of the night close in, more of them every minute. You only walk; your weapons attack on their own. Hold out for fifteen minutes and dawn breaks. Like everything on NoInternet Arcade, it keeps working offline after your first visit. This guide covers the controls, how a night unfolds, every weapon and its evolution, the campfire shop, the upgrades you buy with gold and how to read the dangers.

Controls

There is no attack button. Where you walk is the whole game.

How a night unfolds

A night lasts 15 minutes of play (pauses, cards and shops do not count). The swarm grows from a handful of bats to hundreds of creatures, and the foes get tougher every minute. The night has a script, the same every time:

Gems, levels and cards

Defeated foes drop gems: blue, green and red for bigger ones. Walk over them (or near them: the pickup range grows with the Lodestone) to fill the XP bar at the top. Every full bar is a level, and the game pauses to offer three cards, four if you are lucky:

Rerolls (bought as an upgrade) swap the cards for new ones. When everything is at its top level, the cards offer gold or a honey cake instead.

Weapons and evolutions

A weapon at level 8 plus its paired passive (any level) evolves the next time you open a chest. Evolutions are far stronger than the weapons they come from. The card of a paired passive says which weapon it evolves.

WeaponWhat it doesPassiveEvolution
Spark WandBolts at the nearest foeClockwork (cooldown)Star Storm: a stream of homing stars
Moon SickleA crescent that flies out and comes backWide Lens (area)Eclipse Scythe: giant scythes in every direction
Ember RingA burning ring around youHearth Stone (max HP)Sun Halo: a wide halo that heals you on kills
Star OrbsStars circle you for a few secondsHourglass (duration)Constellation: stars that never stop circling
Thunder BellLightning on random foes on screenFour-Leaf (luck)Storm Cathedral: lightning that chains foe to foe
Frost ShardsA fan of ice that slowsTwin Mirror (projectiles)Blizzard Crown: a ring of ice that freezes
Sun FlaskA flask that bursts into a burning poolMoss Charm (regen)Everspring: wide pools that slow and burn
Thorn LashLashes sideways through a crowdIron Heart (damage)Bramble Tempest: lashes all round and heals

The four remaining passives are Feather Boots (speed), Lodestone (pickup range), Bark Skin (armor) and Owl Quill (XP). The COLLECTION screen on the title keeps every recipe, every passive and every creature you have met.

The campfire shop

Every three minutes a campfire burns the swarm away, every gem on the ground flies to you and a shop opens with four trinkets for the gold you collected this night. Many trinkets have a downside: the Glass Fang adds 25% damage but costs 15 max HP, the Heavy Boots add 2 armor but slow you down, the Lucky Coin trades a little damage for luck. There is also a Camp Feast (heal to full) and a Weapon Polish (a level for a random weapon). Rerolling the shop costs a little more each time. Prices rise with every campfire.

Spend or bank? Gold you keep is banked when the night ends, and banked gold buys permanent upgrades. Spending makes this night easier; banking makes every future night easier.

Upgrades and keepers

Banked gold buys ranks of permanent UPGRADES on the title screen: Might, Vigor, Armor, Recovery, Swiftness, Magnet, Luck, Growth, Greed, Haste, Reach, Multishot, Second Wind (one revival per night) and Reroll.

It also buys keepers. Each keeper starts with a different weapon and has stats that help and hurt:

NEW GAME on the title screen starts over: it erases gold, upgrades, keepers and unlocked nights. Your longest nights, your collection and your high scores stay.

The three nights

Reading the dangers

Every special attack warns you first:

After a hit you are safe for a moment (the keeper blinks).

Pickups

Break the lanterns standing in the field with your weapons. They drop a honey cake (heals 30 HP), a bag of gold, a magnet (every gem flies to you), a sunburst (burns every creature around you; bosses take a heavy blow), a frost clock (the night freezes for a few seconds) or a coin.

Scoring and leaderboards

A night scores 1 point per foe defeated and 5 points per second survived, plus 1,500 for reaching dawn, multiplied by the night (x1, x1.25 or x1.5). The leaderboards keep your best night, with a separate board for Hardcore (OPTIONS > DIFFICULTY), where foes are tougher and hit harder and healing is halved.

Five tips for your first dawn

  1. Walk in wide circles, not back and forth. The horde follows in a line behind you, right into your weapons.
  2. Commit to one evolution early. Take the paired passive when its card comes up and keep leveling that weapon.
  3. Grab the elite’s chest. Elites are worth the detour, and the first one comes at 1:15.
  4. Save a sunburst for a ring. If a lantern drops one while you are fine, leave it on the ground until a ring closes in.
  5. Buy Vigor and Armor first with your banked gold. Staying alive longer is worth more than anything.
